Practical Solutions to Machinery and Maintenance Vibration Problems
Chapter 7, Misalignment
Section 3, For Machines where Drive and Driven Units Operate at Different Temperatures
If both the drive and driven units run smoothly at startup, but gradually vibrate more and more, this is a strong symptom that the machine is "growing" into further and further misalignment. If thermal growth calculations were correctly applied, such machinery should have had higher amplitudes at startup, gradually running smoother and smoother, "growing" into alignment.
