  In most large plants, the vibration instruments are held and controlled by the vibration group.  Yet departments such as maintenance, operations, reliability etc. that do not contain the vibration program could also find it extremely valuable to quickly check the status of a rotating machine.  However, the vibration instrument is either not available or simply too difficult to get and therefore decisions are made with limited information.  The low cost of the DT6 allows for a department manager and/or engineer to have access to a complete picture of the machine in question.  The DT6 is designed to be extremely easy to use, so those who do not use vibration instruments on a daily basis can confidently get the results they need.  Simply place a sensor on the inboard bearing and the other on the outboard bearing and press Acquire.  All the processing is then done for the user and displayed in either Time, Frequency or Phase.  The Analysis Support module will automatically help indicate the primary fault possibilities and rankings.  For those who do not have a strong background in vibration analysis and/or do not perform analysis on a daily basis, this powerful feature alone can make a tremendous difference to the day to day decision requirements unique to a specific department.  As an attempt to have “something more than nothing”, many departments try to use what is known as a vibration pen.  The problem here is that the pen provides an overall value in a numeric number, which tells you the total amount of energy in the full reading range, but does nothing to say what is wrong.  Further, there could be specific sources of vibration that warrant attention, but do not reveal themselves enough in the generalized reading and therefore is easily missed.  There simply is no real comparison to the vast advantage of seeing what is actually happening at each fault frequency and then see the overall machine’s movement via phase.  With an extremely easy to use vibration tool like DT6, various departments can gain the knowledge and confidence to support the vibration team.  Departments can identify troubles themselves, calling the vibration analysts support only when needed.  This makes for a more informed, efficient, organization that can reduce costs and increase production.
